Your Bull Bar Quality Check List

Here’s four simple steps to tell whether a Bull Bar is of high quality or made from recycled Coke cans...

Okay! I know it can be difficult to compare the product of one bull bar manufacturer to the product of another, so here at King bars.  We have put together a short comparison list, to ensure that you are making an informed decision as to the quality of the Bull Bar you are about to buy.

1. Firstly, all you must do is look!!

# Look at the quality of the polish... yes I know, the polish does not make the bull bar, however, it is an indication of the pride that the manufacturer has for their product, if the quality of the polish is high, chances are so is the quality of the manufacturing.

# Look at the quality of the welds. This should be rather obvious, if the welds look like a duck has been walking around the bar, doing what ducks do best, you had better buy your bull bar somewhere else.

# Look at the eyebolts. If there are no eye bolts between the outside posts then the bar is not being supported properly, which means that any impact has more chance of ruining your bar and the front of your truck.  Also, if the bar claims to be a heavy-duty Bull bar, and it only has 2 eyebolts, then, quite frankly,  it is no more than a standard highway bar.

# If possible look at the same bar already fitted to trucks.  If the bar displays no visible signs of impact and yet leans like a gum tree in a windstorm.  Chances are, the mounting system, which holds everything in place is of substandard quality.

# If the bar has fancy stamped configurations to make it look nice, it will be made out of thin and soft aluminum; so don't expect it to do serious work. 

2. Now, you must test the bull bar!!

# Tap the posts with your knuckle, if you hear a hollow tinny sound.  The post is quite likely, tissue paper thin.  Post walls can range from 2.2 mm, up to 6.4 mm in thickness.  Obviously, you don't want a bar made from light material.

# Now tap the pipes, once again, if the pipes sound hollow and tinny, you're looking at an inferior product

# Okay! Now tap the pipes again, if it sounds like you are tapping a solid structure, you have found a pipe, inside another pipe. Needless to say this is an excellent sign of the quality and strength of the bar.

# Check the thickness of the main frame aluminum channel, if it is not at least 10 mm thick, go find another manufacturer.

3. Then, you must investigate the bull bar in more detail.

# Investigate the hinges. A highway bar should have 4 hinge points, and a heavy-duty bar should have at least 6 hinge points.  Under no circumstances should a Bull Bar have less than 4 hinge points.

# Now investigate the steel behind the bar.  If your bar is attached to a steel channel, you have significant strength advantages.  However, if the bar is hinged off a flat steel plate, or something similar, you will have plenty of weight and reduced strength.

# Check out the eyebolt supports which facilitate attaching the main aluminum channel onto the steel backing plate/channel.  The eyebolt supports should be off angle iron to provide a broad surface area of support.  However if there is only a pipe, supporting the eyebolt structure, you have an inferior product.

# Now Look at the mounting system which holds the Bull Bar assembly onto the chassis.  If the bar has slotted boltholes in the mounting system, you have an inferior product.  Slotted boltholes allow movement of the Bar, which produces the Gum tree in a windstorm effect discussed earlier. Also, when that bar takes an impact the movement created by slotted boltholes can break the mount bolts, which is a highly undesirable outcome.

4. Now, talk with the manufacturer. 

# Ask them for the tensile strength rating of the aluminum used in construction. If the aluminum tensile rating is not more then 200mpa they have compromised the strength of their product to facilitate easier manufacture.  This is common in mass produced bars, as it assists in quicker build times.

# Does the manufacturer offer a custom building service?

# Does the manufacturer guarantee their bars?
